Meet one-man-music-machine Let’s Drive to Alaska, and learn why he’s going to become your next favorite dance/electronic project.
Imagine my supreme surprise when I arrived at U-31 last week and stood among the artwork of some of San Diego’s most talented artists, sipping on one of the new frilly cocktails that U-31 has recently introduced, (I had the ‘Marie Antoinette’. It was pretty good, but still didn’t make me feel like I was at The Office Bar.), as I listened to the first act, Let’s Drive to Alaska, take the stage. The setup alone had me wondering what I was about to see and hear, since I definitely expected a plethora of musicians to head up there. A large, full piano/keyboard was adorned with a laptop, synths, and even a guitar pedal, as one man walked up and silently started blowing everyone’s mind.
Enter the expertise of Christopher Garcia, that aforementioned one-man-music-machine who recreates all of his masterpieces solo. Fans of MGMT, Washed Out, and the driving electric motifs of Little Dragon will pretty much lose their heads after one minute of listening to Garcia’s project. On the other hand, I can dig the rhythmic flow of majority of the songs on full-length album Friend/Enemy, which remind me of SBTRKT and Flume’s bass heavy, dance-ready brand of electronica.
Guest vocal appearances on some of his tracks round out this album and showcase the versatility of his music. But it was his live experience that instantly made me a fan, as Garcia focused intently on his elaborate setup, never missing a beat, and filling into song after song with tranquil ease.
